What to Expect in Couples Counseling

Every couple is unique and therefore every treatment will be personalized to fit the needs of each couple. Treatment includes sessions with the couple and with each partner individually. Generally, the format of therapy includes the following components:
Initial Assessment - this process may take from 1-3 sessions and will include both written and verbal accounts about the current dynamics in the relationship, the history of the relationship, identifying strengths and vulnerabilities, establishing goals for therapy and ways to measure progress
Individual Meetings - these meetings will generally happen within the first few weeks of therapy and will allow both partners to discuss their concerns individually—it is important to note that the content of these sessions will not be kept secret from the absent partner but utilized to clarify goals and needs aimed at strengthening the relationship
Individualized Treatment Plan-based upon the information gained through the initial interviews, a treatment plan will be created to address the couple’s goals. Often, between session assignments and exercises are included and continual feedback and progress evaluations are conducted to ensure that treatment continues to be beneficial.
